There is the Minnesota-based Seaton Financial Insurance Agency, a QBE America Unigard Subsidiary, and Seaton Insurance Company in Rhode Island. The purpose of this review is to look at the Rhode Island based Seaton Insurance Company and not any other company named Seaton.

A History of Bad Faith

Seaton wasn’t always at the bottom of the insurance barrel. The company has been around since 1901 and has enjoyed more than a century of delivering quality insurance products at reasonable prices. It was around the turn of the last century that Seaton started having some serious financial difficulties, and these only became more apparent as each year went by.

By 2008, the company had been acquired by another company known as Virginia Holdings Ltd. Normally, being acquired means an end to financial difficulties. When Youtube became too complicated and expensive to maintain for much longer, it was sold to Google, for instance.

In this case, Virginia Holdings Ltd. were, themselves, in financial dire straits at the time they acquired Seaton.

The question of why Virginia Holdings would go around acquiring new companies while in financial distress goes unanswered, and speculation might qualify as libel, but this acquisition is actually one in a long line of acquisitions. Seaton seems to change hands as frequently as a dollar bill, and almost always very shortly after having been acquired.

Seaton’s Current Standing

It’s unclear whether Seaton is even writing auto insurance policies anymore, but they’re still listed in several court cases as being in runoff, as they have been since 2008. If the company is writing new insurance policies, they’re not doing it fast enough to recover from lost business. Whether this is a deliberate strategy or due to poor performance, the runoff has been going for four years as of the time of this writing, which is generally seen as bad news.

The company have had numerous claims filed against them for bad faith and unpaid claims with a number of filings dating as recently as 2010. Whether they started getting their act together around 2011 or they just stopped writing insurance policies, we can’t say.
