A customer satisfaction rating is based on price, policy offerings, billing and payment, claims and customer interaction.
Best Car Insurance Company in California
Wawanesa takes the top slot for car insurance companies in the California region, according J.D. Power and Associates. Its J.D. score of 823 can be supplemented with the strong rating it also received from the A.M. Best Company. A.M. Best gives the parent company of Wawanesa General Insurance Company an A for excellent in the financial strength category and a lowercase a for its issuer credit rating.
Both are very high marks. The former refers to the financial outlook of the company, which A.M. Best classifies as stable. The issuer credit rating, which refers to a company’s ability to make good on senior financial obligations, is also ranked as stable. The company size is between $100 million and $250 million, A.M. Best says.
What Else Makes Wawanesa Stand Out
In addition to its financial stability and customer satisfaction, a few elements stand out for Wawanesa auto insurance. Its website boldly touts roadside assistance coverage for only $10 per year per vehicle, a potentially admirable rate for coverage that extends to 24-hour roadside service 365 days of the year.
As noted here by the Indiana Department of Insurance, towing and other roadside assistance is typically an optional coverage, but that option may be worth pursuing for such a low rate. Providing affordable options for additional coverage add-ons could be a plus that adds to Wawanesa’s solid reputation.
Best Car Insurance in the West
State Farm zooms away with top honors in the west as the only eligible car insurance company that ranks above average in this region, according to J.D. Power and Associates.
The J.D. Power and Associates rank of 837 for State Farm is only part of the high marks for the parent company of State Farm County Mutual Insurance Company.
The company, which falls into a financial size category of $2 billion or greater, gets a superior rating in financial strength with an A++ from A.M. Best. It also merits a lowercase aa++ for its issuer credit rating. A.M. Best ranks it stable in both areas.
What Else Makes State Farm Stand Out
The main claim to fame the State Farm website stresses is “Fast and friendly service anytime, anywhere.” The company does indeed allow many online options for servicing your policy, researching quotes, obtaining information, and even an app designed to improve your family’s driving.
A wide range of discounts also falls into the company’s claim to fame category. The State Farm homepage notes can receive discounts of up to 40% off your auto insurance premiums with the vast array that are available. Discounts are a prime way to save money on auto insurance, according to the Idaho Department of Insurance.
Best Car Insurance in the Central U. S.
Texas Farm Bureau gets the highest ranking of the region with 857 from J.D. Power and Associates. Texas Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company, which A.M. Best assigns as the lead company of the group, is also highly ranked for financial stability and issuer credit rating.
A.M. Best gives the company an excellent A in the former and lowercase a in the latter. Both are stable. Texas Farm Bureau falls into the financial size category of $500 million to $750 million.
What Else Makes Texas Farm Bureau Stand Out
The company’s website plays up its ability to cover “all of life’s moments,” both the big and small. Heartfelt images across the banner fortify this theme with photos of best friends, growing children, and a bride-to-be trying on wedding gowns. Indeed, the company itself is as homegrown as its ads, stemming from farmers in Texas in 1952. They continue to focus on that homey, friendly type of caring.
The company’s website also mentions how one million Texans are already part of its insurance family. That fact may also help guide decisions for those who want to join legions of satisfied customers.
Best Car Insurance in Southeast U.S.
Another farm bureau grabs the top slot from J.D. Power and Associates, this time it’s Farm Bureau Insurance in Tennessee with a rank of 828. A.M. Best further fortifies the company with a superior A+ ranking for financial strength and a lowercase aa for issuer credit.
While the financial outlook is stable, A.M. Best does note the company was downgraded to negative for its issuer credit outlook. The ratings apply to the parent company of Tennessee Farmers Mutual Insurance Company, which falls into the financial size category of $1.25 billion to $1.5 billion.
What Else Makes Tennessee’s Farm Bureau Stand Out
Like Texas’s Farm Bureau, a collection of local farmers has a lot to do with the creation of the company, which may give it a homey and intimate feel. The company website clearly points out “You don’t have to be a farmer” to benefit from the insurance. It also notes Farm Bureau Insurance is rife with agents, stating there are more Farm Bureau agents in a greater number of areas than any other insurance company has.
The site also touts a high level of customer satisfaction by noting that more than 95% of its customers keep renewing their Farm Bureau policies. Low rates and high-quality customer service are the main reasons why, the site says. Not a Farm Bureau customer? The site encourages you to “move over and save” or “shift and save” by choosing Farm Bureau over your existing company.
Also like Texas’s Farm Bureau, the site focuses on various life stages, this one featuring a photo of a baby. Sure enough, you’ll also find a photo of a bride-to-be, noting how all life’s stages can be covered by this single company.
Best Car Insurance in North Central U.S.
The North Central Region saw a tie with two companies each receiving a score of 828 from J.D. Power and Associates. One was Auto-Owners Insurance and the other was State Farm.
You already heard about State Farm’s stellar A.M. Best ratings when it took first place in the West, and Auto-Owners Insurance is right up there with it. A.M. Best gives Auto-Owners Insurance a superior A++ rating for financial strength and a lowercase aa+ for issuer credit. Outlooks are stable in both categories for the company with a financial size of more than $2 billion.

What Makes Them Stand Out
State Farm gets another notch it its belt for placing first in more than one region. This illustrates the company’s expansive reach as well as its high standards that seem to stay in place across the nation.
Auto-Owners Insurance capitalizes on its J.D. Power and Associates customer satisfaction rankings on its website. It also touts its “No Problem” insurance claims coming to you from it’s “No Problem People,” a term the company actually trademarked. Indeed, filing a claim or obtaining insurance may seem not to be a problem for the company, since it offers extensive online options, in-person offices and extends its auto insurance to 26 different states.
Best Car Insurance in North Central U.S.
Amica Mutual took the No. 1 place in the North Central region with a J.D. Power and Associates score of 867. The company is stable in its financial outlook and issuer credit, according to A.M. Best. It also takes a superior ranking of A++ in the former category and a lowercase aa+ in the latter. The company’s financial size is $2 billion or greater.
What Makes Amica Stand Out
Customer service, online service options, a mobile website, and app are all company offerings featured prominently on the Amica website. Move into the auto insurance specifics and you’ll find Amica offers optional features in the form of Platinum Choice Auto options.
Although the Platinum Choice options may vary by state, they typically include rewards that include accident forgiveness for being a good driver, a monitoring service to help prevent identity fraud and coverage that goes beyond the basics. These may include full glass coverage and “prestige” rental coverage that reimburses the cost of a rental vehicle if your car is disabled due to an accident.
Best Car Insurance in the Mid-Atlantic Region
The J.D. Power and Associates winner for the Mid-Atlantic region is Erie Insurance with a score of 834. The company, with a size of $2 billion or greater, ranks equally as high with A.M. Best. It receives a superior A+ ranking and stable financial outlook as well as a lowercase aa- and positive issuer credit rating.
What Makes Erie Stand Out
Erie Insurance puts its history and growth front and center on its website with a catch phrase that encapsulates it all. “Two men. One thin dime. 86 years. 4.3 million policies.” That pretty much sums it all up and may serve as the catalyst needed for some to choose Erie. Solid history. Humble beginnings. Millions of customers.
J.D. Power and Associates says customer satisfaction in general has increased in 2012 over past years.
The region with the best prices for 2012 was the West. The region that got a nod for being the top in the other four categories of billing and payment, claims, policy offerings, and interaction was the Southeast.
